On January 14, 2014 we had our first SRK Headshot Day. Sixteen individuals came in for headshots at our pop up studio in a hair salon in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood.
At the time, I had been a professional photographer for about five years. We had been doing all kinds of photography including photos for high school seniors, executive photos, professional headshots, architectural photography and photos of furniture installations for friends from my previous business of selling office furniture.
To get the photo business rolling, I joined a lead sharing group called BNI (Business Network International). My group had about 65 members from different professions including several lawyers, a sign maker, a graphic designer, a videographer, business consultants, a marketing consultant, a business coach, investment advisors, a dentist, a printer and many more. It was a great group. We needed a directory with photos and most people did not have a good headshot. So we came up with the idea for SRK Headshot Day.
The first headshot day had most of the same elements we have today. My wife Patricia Kline running the show, 30 minute appointments proceeded by a session with our professional makeup artist, two backgrounds and retouching. Sixteen individuals showed up and the results were well received. So that next month we had another. Soon word got around and headshot day caught on.
We even created video and a bus ad to promote the business.
Today, the majority of our business is from SRK Headshot Day. We have our studio in San Francisco, where we offer multiple headshot programs, including our 15 minute Express Program and 60 and 90 minute Premium Sessions. We shoot in different backgrounds and styles to accommodate corporate needs. With our corporate programs, we go onsite to companies that have multiple employees who need photos. We even have a professional branding session for individuals looking to populate an entire website with custom photos.
I would like to thank everyone who has made it such a pleasure to provide this service to more than 15,000 individuals (resulting in well over 1 million photographs) in the 10 years we have been doing SRK Headshot Day. I look forward to ten more years!
